Summer International Health Fellowship with FIMRC

The Foundation for International Medical Relief of Children (FIMRC) is currently enrolling for its Summer International Health Fellowship (SIHF) program.

This fellowship program is especially designed to provide medical experience and exposure appropriate to the undergraduate level. Fellows will have the opportunity to observe in local clinics and hospitals, conduct rounds with physicians, perform patient intake, assist with pharmacy operations, as well as conduct community health outreach.

SIHF’s four and eight week structure gives participants a chance to form lasting relationships and view an underserved population from within. The fellowship is also unique in that it is a long-term experience with a cohort of fellows with similar interests in careers as physicians, physician's assistants, nurses, as well as global health professionals. Fellows are paired together for program activities and are able to network and share their own experiences and goals.

Apply to be on the Emory College Honor Council

Are you interested in protecting academic integrity on campus? The Emory College Honor Council is seeking students to serve on the Honor Council, the Appeal Panel, and the Summer Honor Council in the 2018-2019 academic year. Eligibility to serve on the Honor Council is determined by your expected graduation date. 

Members will earn two academic credits each semester they serve by participating in the Honor Council Practicum course.

Kuchnir Dermatology Bridge Year Program

Interested in taking a gap year prior to medical school? Apply for the Kuchnir Dermatology Bridge Year Program! This 14-month or 26-month program allows students to gain clinical experience by coordinating patient care, scribing for providers, assisting in basic procedures, and handling the administrative tasks of medicine. This program also offers the opportunity to attend educational events such as lectures, conferences, or a suturing clinic.

Summer Opportunities

As pre-health advisors, one of the most popular questions we get asked around this time is, "What should I do over the summer?" While there's no one right answer to this question, there's also no wrong answer either. There are a variety of opportunities students can take advantage of during the summer, including research, internships, study abroad, volunteering, clinical experiences, part time jobs, and more.

As always, we encourage you to think about what you want to do. What is something you'll be excited to do over the summer? What do you want to learn? In what area do you want to gain more experience? Once you've answered these questions, you can start to narrow down the types of opportunities you want to explore.

Below you'll find a list of resources to help you explore summer opportunities. Remember, deadlines for these programs typically begin at the start of the spring semester, so early application submission is encouraged.

3.) Your local pre-health advising office
Thinking about going home over the summer? Check to see if any nearby universities have a pre-health advising office. Like Emory, many pre-health offices have blogs or newsletters they send out with local opportunities for pre-health students. A quick Google search can get you to the office's website, and then look around for anything that says "Register" or a link to sign up for a list-serve. Many colleges will allow you to register without a school affiliated email address.

The pre-health websites themselves can also be a wealth of information. Look for key words like "Prepare" or "Gaining Experience" - this is usually where you can find lists of popular local volunteer locations, job opportunities, or research positions. You may have to dig a little bit, but this is a great way to get the most relevant local information for pre-health students.

Pre-Med Panel with KAMSA of Georgia

North Shore University Hospital Healthcare Exploration Program

The Northwell Health Healthcare Exploration Program at North Shore University Hospital is designed to expose the undergraduate college student to various careers in the medical field. Through a balanced 8-week curriculum, students will encounter a broad range of clinical services at a tertiary care medical center. Based on the student’s interest, students spend a time shadowing Physicians, Surgeons, Nurses, and Physician Assistants in the following clinical areas: Neurosciences, Cardiology, Orthopedics, Emergency Medicine, Perioperative Services, Pediatrics/Neonatal ICU, Medicine, and Cancer Services. 

 

In addition to shadowing healthcare providers, students also have the opportunity to explore the medical education components of healthcare by attending Grand Rounds. While students do not provide direct patient care, they are encouraged throughout the process to ask questions, become engaged with the healthcare providers, and obtain their own mentor during their internship experience.

MGH Institute of Health Professions Webinar on Prerequisites for Health Professions

UCLA Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Enrichment Program (UCLA PREP)

Applications are  now open for UCLA PREP. UCLA PREP is a non-residential program designed to provide pre-medical and pre-dental students from disadvantaged backgrounds with a means of strengthening their ability and readiness to study medicine or dentistry. As a result of full participation in UCLA PREP, participants should have enhanced their chances of being accepted to medical or dental school and succeeding once there.

Components of the program include academic (MCAT/DAT prep), career guidance and personal development, clinical preceptorships, and special events. 

There is no tuition for participation. Students who must relocate to participate in the program may be eligible for a stipend depending on availability of funds. Applications a

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible:

• Come from an educationally or economically disadvantaged background.
• Applicants must be a U.S citizen or hold a permanent resident visa, or documentation of approved eligibility for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) in the State of California
• Minimum 2.5 science GPA for freshmen and sophomores
• Minimum 2.8 science GPA for juniors and seniors
• One year of biology or chemistry completed by the beginning of the program
• Two (2) letters of recommendation
• Demonstrated interest in addressing issues affecting underserved populations in healthcare
• Compelling personal statement
